chapter 10-17 Flashcards
how does heat affect masonry?
stones and concrete may experience spalling when they are heated
cast iron may crack or shatter when it is
a.heated indirectly
b.rapidly cooled with water
c.in contact with direct flames
d.used as a decorative structural element
b
what building material has great heat resistance
gypsum wallboard
also known as dry wall
explain how a hose should dry
hung up from a rack in a station. away from high heat or direct sunlight. don’t put into service until completely dry
name some damage that will put a hose out of service
abrasions, cuts, tears, fire, heat, freezing, mold and mildew, rusting, cracking due to age, car exhaust
what is a booster hose line
rubber covered hose that are coiled on reels. used for quick fire on small exterior fires
what is a dry barrel hydrants?
designed in use for freezing climates. main control valve is located below the freeze line
what is a wet barrel hydrant
has water in it at all times
what is a CAFS system and how does it work
compressed air foam system. adds class a foam to the tank to spray foam off a fire truck
name a static water source
lake
ponds
rivers
swimming pools
what is a dry-hydrant connection
allows the fire truck to draft water from the lowest point of a static water source
explain water shuttle operations
hauling water from a supply source to the incident scene
what’s a jet siphon
used to transfer water from one tank to another
what is a wye appliance?
divided a single hose line into two hose lines
what is a siamese appliance
combines multiple lines into one
whats ldh stand for
large diameter hose
SDH?
small diameter hose
what is a reducer hose fitting
used to connect a smaller diameter hose to a large one
what is overhaul
firefighters enter the structure after the fire is out to ensure no chance for re-ignition. also to search for fatalities or other damages
what are 4 tools used during overhaul
pike poles
axes
prying tools
power saws
drills
screwdrivers
shovels
thermal imager
what should firefighters continue to do during overhaul
be aware
wear ppe at all times
watch for danger
do you NEED to have a charged hose line while doing overhaul
yes absolute need
where does overhaul typically begin?
at the most severe fire involvement. so start at where the fire was
what is the area of origin
general location where the fire began. don’t touch this area in case the fire leads to legal issues
what are some signs of arson
wind direction and velocity
doors or windows locked or unlocked
location of the fire
containers or cans
burglary tools
familiar faces
unusual orders
incendiary devices
what’s an exterior fire exposure
remove endangered persons property or items
apply water or foam
relocate vehicles
move the fire truck
what’s an interior exposure
involves closing doors between the fire and the unaffected area
what’s an fdc and how does it work
fire department connection. used to connect to a hose line to have supplied water withing a big building like a hockey rink or football stadium. also connections used for sprinklers inside buildings
whats a OS&Y valve?
Outside screw and yoke valve. shows with a screw if the valve is open or closed
if it’s threaded out it’s open
Natural gas
flammability 5-15%
no smell
methane
non toxic
rises in the air
difficult to detect without instruments
LPG- Liquified Petroleum gas
also known as propane
1 and 1/2 times as heavy as air
so it will sink
concentration between 2/9.5%
Can firefighters turn off gas and electricity to a house or building?
yes we can but not completely. we can shut off the main breaker and valve. it will never fully be off until the city turns it off from the street to the house but we shut off from right up to the house and the whole house. NEVER EVER EVER turn it back on after the fires out. house will go boom.
do you need to wear full ppe to a car fire. need to wear a mask?
yes, cars generate a wide variety of toxic smoke and vapor’s. treat it as a structure fire
what should you do before starting extinguishing or using JAWS.
name an example
isolate the vehicle from any ignition source.
key fob
where do you position yourself at a vehicle fire attack? where do you attack from?
position hose line between burning vehicle and exposures
position uphill and upwind of the fire
attack at a 45-degree angle
what type fire is a vehicle fire?
type d most of the time. burning metals
how does class d extinguisher work? what does it look like
like sand or powder. extinguishes metals. smothers it let it burn because metal fires are impossible to put out
what are the three ways to put out an undercarriage fire?
direct attack
bank of the ground
through the hood and aim down
