chapter 10 Flashcards
refreshing my memory
what is expansion
when the size of an object increases its called expansion
what is contraction
contraction is when the size of an object decreases
definition of density
density of an object decreases when an object expands. the density of an object increases when an object contracts
expansion in a solid
the particles of a solid can only vibrate in a fixed position and it cannot move around.
expansion in a liquid
the particles in a liquid moves faster when they gain energy during heating, occupying more space. there would be an increase in volume.
expansion in gas
the gas particles moves at a high speed constantly in all directions. The rate of expansion is at its highest in a gas.
bimetallic strip
the strips would bend at different directions during heating and cooling. during cooling brass would contract faster than iron, affecting the volume of the brass which would be smaller than iron.
