Chapter 10 Flashcards

1
Q

Did any of the operational fire management activities, resources and equipment described in Chapter 10 surprise you?

A

900 people seems like a small amount of people to tackle such a large land mass. Also curious how provincial budgets will respond to the 2024 wildfire season if it is reflective of 2023.

Q

What do you think are the biggest challenges for fire management agencies when it comes to firefighting equipment and resources?

A

The dynamics of cross provincial sharing of resources in that the increase in fire occurrence has created situations where each provinces demand for their own workforce hinders the ability to provide support to other provinces. Provinces will need to increase resources but also looking to the future, the uncharacteristic nature of our fire seasons would need to continue otherwise increasing resources is no longer justified.

Q

In recent decades, resource sharing among fire management agencies in Canada and internationally has become more and more common. In 2023, Canada imported 7,308 personnel from 12 different countries (equivalent to 725 person years). Does this mean fire management agencies in Canada should be increasing their resource levels?

A

Yes. If Alberta is importing an additional 6300 personnel to fight fire then the 900 personnel currently budgeted for is significantly below an effective target.

Q

In this week’s reading - the authors call for a “paradigm shift” - does their call for action sound fundamentally different from what fire management agencies have been saying in years/decades past?

A

Based on our learning, and other courses too, more fire on the landscape is not a paradigm shift. Although increased interagency cooperation might be. I would consider it more of an evolution to increased wildfire occurance because province by province mgmt has historically been effective.
