A
  • Be calm and confident
  • Identify using at least 2 identifies
  • Ask about previous blood collection experiences
  • Develop a plan
  • Get at child’s eye level and explain and demonstrate procedure
  • Establish guidelines
  • Be honest if child asks if it will hurt
  • Encourage parent involvement

6-12 yrs: relate pain to past experiences

2 ways to decrease needlestick pain

A

Topical anesthetic EMLA; works after 45-60 min and lasts 2-3 hrs

Oral surcoe- sugar placed on pacifier or nipple; given 2 min prior to procedure and lasts 5 min
