8 steps to preparing child and parent for blood collection
- Be calm and confident
- Identify using at least 2 identifies
- Ask about previous blood collection experiences
- Develop a plan
- Get at child’s eye level and explain and demonstrate procedure
- Establish guidelines
- Be honest if child asks if it will hurt
- Encourage parent involvement
Age range Response to needles
1-2 yrs: overract to painless procedures, e.g. taking a temp
3-5 yrs: perceive pain as punishment
6-12 yrs: relate pain to past experiences
13-17 yrs: independent and may be embarassed to show fear; need privacy
2 ways to decrease needlestick pain
Topical anesthetic EMLA; works after 45-60 min and lasts 2-3 hrs
Oral surcoe- sugar placed on pacifier or nipple; given 2 min prior to procedure and lasts 5 min
Where should venipuncture be done on child younger than 2
Only on superficial vein
Blood spot testing should be before newborn is how old?
72 hours
Venipuncture in an infant/toddler is recommended for which blood test
