CHAPTER 10 Flashcards
Cognitive constructivism
Piaget
human beings must build their own knowledge and meaning through experiences.
Social constructivism
Vygotsky
emphasizes the social contexts of learning, and the idea that knowledge is collaboratively constructed.
Situated cognition
refers to the idea that thinking is âsituatedâ in social and physical contexts, not within an individualâs mind. Knowledge is embedded in and connected to the context in which learning develops.
Cognitive apprenticeship
An expert stretches and supports the noviceâs understanding and use of cultural skills.
scaffolding
Changing the level of support over the course of a teaching
session.
Cooperative learning
Occurs when students work in small groups to help each other.
Tutoring
Includes peers, classroom aides, volunteers, and mentors
Cooperative learning 2
Research has found (Slavin, 1995) that cooperative learning can be an effective strategy to improve student achievement when:
*Group rewards are generated
*It is in the studentsâ best interest to help each other
*Individuals are held accountable with individual contributions considered.
Positive aspects of cooperative learning
*Increased interdependence and interactions with other students
*Enhanced motivation to learn
*Improved learning, teaching material to
others
Negative aspects of cooperative learning
Some students prefer to work alone
*Low-achieving students may âslow downâ high-achieving students
*Some students may do all of the work while others do little (social loafing)
Structuring group interaction
Assign students specific roles within group
Give everyone a sense of importance
Heterogeneous groups of 2-6 work
Social constructivist programs
Actively involved constructing own knowledge
Fostering a community of learning
Focus on literacy development and biology
Program emphasis: uses adults as role models
Teaching children
Online computer consultation
Fosters culture of learning, caring, sharing, and the production of work that is shared
Curriculum
In-depth, cross-disciplinary inquiry into real-world problems.
Instruction
Collaborative, self-directed, exploratory learning.
