Chapter 10 Flashcards
What are the steps in the decision tree for periodontal health?
- Does the clinical assessment indicate health or disease?
- If disease, is it gingivitis or periodontitis?
- What type of gingivitis? OR What type of periodontitis?
What over and hidden signs may indicate disease?
Overt: Color, contour, consistency
Hidden: Bone loss, purulence
What might we see that initially indicates disease but is actually health?
Non-inflammatory conditions like recession from toothbrushing
What signs do we look for when determining if disease is gingivitis or periodontitis?
- No attachment loss points to gingivitis
- Attachment loss indicates periodontitis
What are the steps in the decision tree for implants?
- Does the clinical assessment indicate health or disease?
- If disease, does the inflammation stay confined to the peri-implant soft tissue or extend to bone?
- Soft tissue damage indicates peri-implant mucositis, soft tissue + bone damage indicates peri-implantitis
What other findings should be noted aside from “gingivitis” or “periodontitis” when describing the overall perio condition of the pt.?
- Recession
- Aberrant frenum attachment
- Occlusal trauma
- Minimal keratinized tissue
- Gingival enlargement
What is the definition of stage I perio?
Initial periodontitis
What is the definition of stage II perio?
Moderate periodontitis
What is the definition of stage III perio?
Severe periodontitis w/ potential for tooth loss
What is the definition of stage IV perio?
Advanced periodontitis w/ extensive tooth loss and potential for loss of dentition
What is the definition of grade A perio?
Slow rate of anticipated disease progression
What is the definition of grade B perio?
Moderate rate of anticipated disease progression
What is the definition of grade C perio?
Rapid rate of anticipated disease progression
