Chapter 1: What Is Statistics Flashcards
Descriptive statistics
Methods of organizing, summarizing, and presenting data in a convenient and informative way. May be graphical or numerical
Measure of central location
“typical” mark (datum)
Average, mean, median, mode
Measure if variability
How close marks in data set are to the central location
Range
Distribution
Inferential statistics
Body of methods used to draw conclusions or inferences about characteristics of populations based on sample data.
Population
The group of all items of interest to a statistics practitioner. (Generally large, may be infinite.)
(Also: entire set of observations under study)
Parameter
A descriptive measure of a population. (In inferential statistics, parameter is set to information required)
Sample
Set of data drawn from the studied population
Statistic
A descriptive measure of a sample, used to make inferences about parameters.
Statistical inference
The process of making an estimate, prediction, or decision about a population based on sample data.
Requires measures of reliability
Measures of reliability
Confidence level
Significance level
Confidence level
The proportion of times that an estimating procedure will be correct
Significance level
A measure of how frequently the conclusion of an estimating procedure will be wrong
