Chapter 1 - Welcome To Science Flashcards
What is a dependent variable?
The thing that we measure.
What is an Independent variable?
The thing that we change.
What is a control?
A test left untested.
What are the constants?
Thing kept the same to make it a fair test.
Key things needed for a table…?
Underlined title, units in subheadings{length(cm)} use ruler, use pencil.
Key things for a graph…?
Underlined title, labelled axes, Independent variable on the X axis, even scale, indents, data points, line of best fit.
List the risks for this experiment;
Boiling water in a beaker over a Bunsen Burner.
Cut from glass, Burn from Bunsen flame, Burn from hot water
What’s the difference between an observation and an inference?
An observation is when you observe thing and note what happens.
E.g. The water bubbled as it boiled.
An inference is when you explain why that observation happened.
E.g. The water bubbled because it was heating up and the particles got more energy and started to turn into gas particles and started to surface.
What is the difference between an Aim and a hypothesis?
An Aim is the intention of the aim and is referred to in a Practice Report.
A hypothesis is what you think the result of the experiment will be.
{IMPORTANT: do not use the word ‘i’}
What makes experiment results more reliable?
Doing the experiment more than once proves the results.
What happens when you melt a solid?
It turns into a liquid.
What happens when you evaporate a liquid?
It turns into a gas.
What happens when you cool a gas using condensation?
It turns into a liquid.
What happens when you freeze a liquid?
It freezes into a solid.
How do you calculate density?
Mass of a object (g) divided by its volume in cm cubed.
