Chapter 1 - Vocabulary Flashcards
Actuators
X
Charge air coolers
X
Compression
X
Compression ignition
The process by which compression raises the air temperature above the fuel’s ignition temperature causing combustion to occur instantly as the fuel is injected, eliminating the need for a mechanical ignition system which are necessary in gasoline engines
Compression ratio
A comparison of the volume of air in a cylinder before compression with its volume after compression
ex. 16:1 compression ratio means that at the top of the compression stroke, the air in the cylinder takes up 1/16 the volume it did when the piston was at the bottom of the compression stroke

Diesel fuel
Fuel used in diesel engines that contains more heat (BTUs or joules) than gasoline does

Stroke
The up or down movement of the piston within the cylinder
Four stroke - One stroke each for intake, compression, power, and exhaust
Two stroke - all four actions are accomplished with only two piston strokes, one up (intake and compression) and one down (power and exhaust).
