3
Q
Name 3 major advantages and disadvantages of diesel engines/fuel.
A
Advantages:
- Simplicity of maintenance based on elimination of need for mechanical ignition system components like spark plugs, coils, etc.
- Higher durability than gasoline engine components based on need to withstand operation at higher compression ratios and higher air temperatures than gasoline engines
- Fuel efficiency (converts 40% of fuel to usable power rather than 25% in a gasoline engine)
Disadvantages:
- The same characteristics that make them more durable than gasoline engines also makes them more expensive to build
- Gasoline engines run quieter and offer faster acceleration than diesel engines
- Diesel fuel attracts water which can cause bacteria to form in the fuel system
