3
Q

Name 3 major advantages and disadvantages of diesel engines/fuel.

A

Advantages:

  1. Simplicity of maintenance based on elimination of need for mechanical ignition system components like spark plugs, coils, etc.
  2. Higher durability than gasoline engine components based on need to withstand operation at higher compression ratios and higher air temperatures than gasoline engines
  3. Fuel efficiency (converts 40% of fuel to usable power rather than 25% in a gasoline engine)

Disadvantages:

  1. The same characteristics that make them more durable than gasoline engines also makes them more expensive to build
  2. Gasoline engines run quieter and offer faster acceleration than diesel engines
  3. Diesel fuel attracts water which can cause bacteria to form in the fuel system
