What is tithe?
A portion of crops or percentage of earnings paid to the Church.
Sumptuary Laws
Rules that had to be followed by peasants - including how they spent their money - it restricted certain clothes to people based on their class
Describe the Black Death
Plague that killed approximately 25 million Europeans between 1346 and 1350
Tell me about Journeymen
Young men who learned trades from masters and took tests after years of working hard, before they could join guilds.
What is a guild?
An organization that controlled prices and set standards of quality.
Urban vs Rural
Urban = CITY
Rural = COUNTRY
What is a Monastery?
Building where monks lived and carried out religious duties.
What is a Serf?
Peasant who worked on manors for the lord, and weren’t allowed to leave without permission from him.
Describe a Freeman
They were peasants who rented land and worked for pay.
What is a manor? Tell me another name for it.
A piece of land. Also known as a fief.
Define allegiance in one word
LOYALTY
Describe a hierarchy
Social system where status is ranked.
What is feudalism?
System of political organization during the Middle Ages. The lord owned the land and others served him.
