Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Point
A point has no dimensions it is represented by a dot
Line
Has one dimension. It is represented by line with two arrowheads, but it extends without end. Through any two points there is exactly one line
Plane
A plane has two dimensions. It is represented by a shape that looks like a floor or a wall, but it extends without end. Through any three points not on the
same line there is exactly one plane
Defined terms
Terms that can be described using known words
Undefined terms
A word that does not have a formal definition but has an agreed meaning
Line segment
Part of a line that consists of two points, called endpoints, and all points on the line that are between the endpoints.
Ray
Part of alignment consists of a point, called an endpoint, and all points on the line
Opposite Rays
To rays on the same line that share a common endpoint
Intersection
The set of points the figures have in common
What is the intersection of two lines?
A point
What is the intersection of two planes?
A line
Coordinate
The real number that corresponds to a point on a line
Congruent segments
Line segments that have the same length
Angle
To rays that share the same endpoint
Angle bisector
Hey Ray that divides an angle into two angles that are congruent
Linear Pair
Two adjacent angles whose noncommon sides are opposite rays ( form a straight line)
Acute angle
An angle with the measure greater than 0° but less than 90°
Right angle
An angle with a measure of 90°
Obtuse angle
An angle with a measure greater than 90° and less than 180°
Straight angle
An angle with a measure of 180°
Reflex angle
An angle with the measure greater than 180° and less than 360°
Complementary angles
Two angles whose measures add up to 90°
Supplementary angles
Two angles whose sum is 180°
Adjacent angles
Two angles that share a common vertex and side , but have no common interior points
( next to each other)
Vertical Angles
Two angles are vertical angles if their sides form two pairs of opposite rays
Polygon
A closed figure that lies in a plane That is formed by three or more line segments and where each side intersects exactly 2 lines
Convex
A polygon is convex if no line that contains a side of the polygon enters into the interior of the polygon
Concave
A polygon that is not convex
Equilateral polygon
All sides are congruent
Equiangular polygon
All angles in the interior of the polygon are congruent
Regular polygon
A convex polygon that is both equilateral and equiangular
