Chapter 1- Vocab Flashcards
Chemical
Any substance that has a definite composition
Chemistry
The study of composition, structure, and properties of matter
Matter
Anything that takes up space
Element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down by any means and is made up of 1 atom
Compound
A substance that cannot be broken down
Extensive
Depends on the amount of matter present
Intensive property
Does not depend on amount of matter present
Mass
Measurement of amount of matter
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that maintains identity
Change of state
Change of a substance from one state to another
Solid
Definite volume and shape
Liquid
Definite volume but indefinite shape
Gas
Indefinite volume and shape
Plasma
Atoms loose most of their electrons
Reactant
Substances that react In a chemical change
Product
Substances that are formed by a chemical change
Mixture
Blend of 2 or more kinds of matter each of which retains its own identity and properties
Homogenous
Mixtures that are uniform in composition, equally mixed, and cannot see different components
Heterogenous
Mixtures that are not uniform, they can be separated, and you can see most of the different components
Solution
Homogenous mixture of 2 or more substances uniformaly dispurts throughout a single phase
Solvent
Does the dissolving
Solute
Substance being dissolved
Soluble
Capable of being dissolved
Alloy
Solid solution in which atoms of 2 or more metals are uniformaly mixed
Suspension
Mixture in which that particles are so large they settle out unless the mixture is constantly stirred or adjetated
Colloid
Mixture in which particles are intermediate in size
Tyndall effect
Occurs when light is scattered by colloidal particles
Electrolyte
Substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts an electric current
Nonelectrolytes
Substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that doesn’t conduct an electric current
