Chapter 1 - The Science Of Biology Flashcards
 Define inference
A logical interpretation based on prior knowledge or experience
Describe the difference between quantitive and qualitative data
Qualitative data is descriptive and involves characteristics that can’t usually be counted. Quantitive data is expressed as numbers, obtained or accounting by measuring.
How many variables can be in a valid experiment?
Three
List the characteristics of living things
Living things are made up of units called cells, living things reproduce, living things are based on universal genetic code, living things grow and develop, living things obtain and use materials and energy, living things respond to their environment.
List the steps of the scientific method in order
State the problem, gather information on the topic, from a hypothesis, experiment, record in analyze data, state a conclusion.
What is data?
Evidence; information gathered from observations.
What is a hypothesis?
Possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question
List the levels of organization for all living things
Molecules, cells, tissues, organisms, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere.
What is the metric base unit for mass? Length? Volume?
The unit for mass is gram (G), the unit for length is my Meter (M), in the unit for volume is Liter (L.).
Define independent variable:
The variable that is deliberately changed in a controlled experiment
Define independent variable
A well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations
