Data Set
Information that has been collected and organized by the researcher
Validity
The degree to which the crime measure accurately gauges the amount of crime in society.
Reliability
The extent to which the crime measure is a consistent and dependable indicator of the level of crime in society.
Part I or Index Offendes
Serious crimes highlighted in the FBI’s Crime in the United States. TOgether, these crimes (murder, rape, robbert, assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson) make up the crime index.
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)
Reports both crimes and arrests; eventually will replace the Uniform Crime Report as the source of official FBI counts of crimes
National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)
Aimed to uncover unreported crime and learn the actual level of crime in the country; 60,000 households respond to the survey each year
Compstat
Computer Statistics; NYPD statistics are complied at the precinct level and sent to headquarters for analysis.
