Chapter 1: The Benefits and Risks of Using Statistics Flashcards
statistics
Statistics is a collection of procedures and principles for gaining and analyzing information in order to help people make decisions when faced with uncertainty.
sample
the group of people used for the purposes of the study; for the study to be successful the sample must be large enough and representative enough to be applicable to a larger population
population
the larger population to which the results of a study can be applied
observational study
when the behaviors of a sample are simply observed and not manipulated
randomized experiment
experiment in which sample is randomly split between two groups in which the variables are controlled and manipulated
randomized assignments
chance is left to determine the group assignment of each subject (random # generator, flipping a coin etc.)
