Homeostasis
Stable: Physiology of your body is trying to accomplish on a 24/7 basis. Your body wants stability and balance all the time
Inferior
Refers to something below a particular point
Superior
Refers to something above a particular point
Anterior
Toward the front of the body
Posterior
Toward the rear of the body
Medial
Nearer to the center or midline of the body
Lateral
Further away from center or midline of the body
Midline
Draw a line down the center of your body dividing it into right and left halves. That’s your midline
Distal
Farther away from the trunk of the body
Proximal
Close to the trunk of the body
Superficial
Near the surface of the body
Deep
Far from the surface of the body
Intermediate
Anything between 2 reference points (heart is between 2 lungs)
Caudal
Something is lower than another part of the body or towards the posterior part of the body like a tail
cranial
Anything near the head
cranium
medical term for your head cavity
Visceral
May see instead of the ord “deep” - anything not visible on the surface of the body
Palmar
Refers to the palm side of the hand
Plantar
Refers to the bottom of the foot
Dorsal
Something on the bck of a reference point. Sometimes interchangeable with posterior
Ventral
The front of a reference point. Sometimes interchangeable with anterior
Parasagittal
Near the sagittal line
Sagittal Plane
Also called the lateral plane. Separates the body into left and right halves
Midsagittal plane
Midline of the body
Parasagittal plane
Any line that is parallel to the midsagittal plane
Coronal plane (frontal plane)
Divides the body into the front (dorsal) and back (ventral) parts
Transverse (axial) plane
Divides the body into the top half and the bottom half. Only plane that is horizontal and parallel to the ground
