Applied Ethics
Practical application of moral standards that are meant to benefit the patient
Bioethics
Branch of applied ethics; is a field resulting from modern medical advances and research
Morality
The quality of being virtuous or practicing the right of conduct
Amoral
Someone lacking or indifferent to moral standards
Study of Ethics
Study of the branch of philosophy related to morals
Utilitarianism
Ethical theory of the greatest good for the greatest number
Rights-Based Ethics
Natural rights; ethical theory or primary emphasis on a persons individual rights (OSHA, Unions)
Duty-Based Ethics
Performing one’s duty to various people and institutions such as employers, employees, and customers
Justice-Based Ethics
Important moral restraint called the “veil of ignorance”; no bias
Virtue-Based Ethics
Character based ethics; Personal moral/values
Principle of Autonomy
People have the right to make decisions about their own life.
Principle of Beneficence
The principle of doing good; means that we must not harm patients while we are trying to help
Principle of nonmalfeasance
“First do no harm”
Principle of justice
Must treat equals, equally; same treatment for everyone rich or poor, etc
