Chapter 1 - Study of Life Flashcards
What are the basic characteristics of life?
Growth, Reproduction, Homeostasis, Sense and Response to Stimuli, Obtain and Use Energy, Evolution Adaptation, Order
What is a controlled experiment?
Controlled experiments use experimental control groups and control groups to test a hypothesis.
Purpose of discovery-based/Inductive science?
To give an explanation through observation.
Purpose of hypothesis-based/Deductive science?
To test out possibilities from a potential explanation.
What is a hypothesis?
a tentative answer to a well-framed question
What is a scientific theory?
Broad scope, supported by accumulated evidence from many hypotheses, leads to new hypotheses, that can be modified or rejected.
The hierarchical categorization of living matter from atoms to the biosphere.
Atom, molecules, macromolecules, organelles, cells, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and biosphere.
Compare/Contrast
Prokaryotic cell type
Eukaryotic cell type
Prokaryotes are single-celled or colonial organisms that do not have membrane-bound nuclei.
Eukaryotes do have membrane-bound organelles and a membrane-bound nucleus.
Three Domains
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
