22
Q

What can cause the motion of a gas’ particles to increase?(list two things)

A

An increase in temperature, and an increase in pressure.

23
Q

What is a pure substance?

A

It is a substance that is made up of only one type of particle and without any impurities. It has a specific melting point and boiling point.

24
Q

What are elements composed of?

A

It is composed of its own type of atoms

25
Q

What is a compound?

A

It is more than one type of atom chemically combined

26
Q

What is the kinetic particle theory used to describe and what are the main points of it?

A

The kinetic particle theory is used to describe the three different states and the changes between them in terms of the movement of particles.

The main points are:

-All matter is made up of many small particles.

-Particles are in continuous motion, the higher the temperature, the higher the average kinetic energy.

-The movement and the arrangement of particles are different in the three states.

-The pressure of the gas is produced by the atoms or molecules when hitting the walls of the container. The more the particles collide, the greater the pressure.

27
Q

Are changes of states reversible?

A

Yes

28
Q

What is intermolecular space?

A

It is the space between the particles

29
Q

List all three states from least intermolecular space to most:

A

Solid, liquid, gas

29
Q

What is intermolecular force?

A

It is the attractive forces between the molecules

30
Q

List all three particles from weakest intermolecular force to strongest:

A

Gas, liquid, solid

31
Q

What is an exothermic reaction?

A

It is a reaction that releases energy from the system in the form of heat

32
Q

What is an endothermic reaction?

A

It is a reaction that the system absorbs energy from its surrounding in the form of heat

33
Q

What is a mixture?

A

It is when two or more substances are physically combined.

34
Q

What is a solution?

A

It is when the components of a mixture completely mix

35
Q

What is a solute?

A

The solid substance that dissolves in a liquid

36
Q

What is a solvent?

A

It is a liquid that dissolves the solute

37
Q

In salty water, which is the solute and which is the solvent?

A

Solute: Salt
Solvent: Water

38
Q

What is suspension?

A

It is when the components of a mixture remain separate

39
Q

What does it mean when something is soluble?

A

It is when a solid is totally dissolved in a liquid

40
Q

What does it mean when something is miscible?

A

It is when two liquids totally dissolve

41
Q

When the temperature increases, do gases become more or less soluble?

A

They become less soluble

42
Q

When the pressure increases, do gases become more or less soluble?

A

They become more soluble

43
Q

What is diffusion?

A

It is the movement of particles from high to low concentration

44
Q

What two things can affect the rate of diffusion?

A

The molecular mass and the temperature

45
Q

Complete the sentence: The smaller the molecular mass…(talk about diffusion)

A

The higher the rate of diffusion

46
Q

Complete the sentence: The lower the temperature…(talk about diffusion)

A

The lower the rate of diffusion

47
Q

What are alloys?

A

It is when liquid metals are mixed together before solidifying
