Chapter 1 Section 1: Intro To Statistics Flashcards
Statistics
Is the science of gathering, describing, or analyzing data/ or
Are the actual numerical descriptions of sample data.
Variables
A value or characteristic that changes among members of the population.
Population
A particular group of interest.
Data
The counts, measurements, or observations gathered about a specific variable in a population in order to study it.
Parameter
A numerical description of a population characteristic.
Sample
A subset of the population from which data are collected.
Sample Statistics
Numerical descriptions of sample characteristics.
Population versus Sample
Population Sample
Whole group Part of the group
Group we want to know about. Characteristics are called statistics
Characteristics are called parameters Statistics are always known
Parameters are generally unknown. Group we do know about
Parameters are fixed. Statistics change with the sample
Descriptive Statistics
Gathers, sorts, summarizes, and displays the data.
Inferential Statistics
Involves using descriptive statistics to estimate population parameters.
Census
A study on which data are obtained from every member of the population.
