What are the three branches of Canada’s government?
Executive branch, Legislative branch, Judicial branch.
Who makes up the executive branch?
Prime Minister, Cabinet.
What does MP stand for?
Members of Parliament.
What is a riding?
An area that an MP represents.
Where do MPs meet to discuss legislation and bills?
House of Commons. Also in the Cabinet.
How do you become Prime Minister? List the 3 steps.
Be elected as leader of a political party
Be elected as a member of parliament
Your party must win the most seats in the house of commons
What is the job of the executive branch of government?
Proposes laws.
What is the Cabinet?
People with responsibilities for different government departments. Ex. health, finance, etc.
What does the legislative branch of government do?
They vote on laws.
What is Canada’s electoral system called?
Democracy.
What does representation by population mean?
Being represented by the population.
What is the role of the Senate?
They have the ability to deny bills.
Why is the judicial branch separate from the other two branches?
The judicial branch is separate to check on the other two branches’ powers.
What is the structure of Canada’s federal political system?
The Executive branch proposes laws, Legislative branch votes on laws, The Judicial branch puts laws into action
• How do laws become laws?
First, they are bills then it goes to the house of commons then they vote on it, and then it goes to the senate than goes to the Prime Minister/President
