Chapter 1- Research Methods Flashcards
What’s the Independent variable?
The variable that is deliberately manipulated by the experimenter.
Such as giving the participant caffeine
What is the Dependant variable?
This variable is dependant on the IV.
Such as the behaviour of the samples given caffeine and not given caffeine
What is random sampling?
Where every member of the required population have an equal chance of being chosen.
What is a strength of random sampling?
It gives a very broad representation
What is stratified sampling?
Where the population is divided into categories and selected from each category
What is a weakness of random sampling?
It is difficult to achieve
What is a strength of stratified sampling?
It eliminates the effect of the variable on which the sample is stratified.
What is a disadvantage of stratified sampling?
It’s time consuming and expensive
What is convenient sampling?
Picking whoever is available at the time
What is a strength of convenient sampling?
It’s quick, easy and cheap
What is a disadvantage of convenient sampling?
It is a bias sample
What is a sample?
A selection of individuals from a population who undergo an experiment
What’s a mean
The average.
Add up all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are.
What’s the median?
The middle value of all the numbers
What is the mode?
The value that occurs most often
