Chapter 1 Pink Terms: Biology and the Tree of Life ( 7 Categories) Flashcards
What is modern bio? (SFGDoLO) (Someone Fun Got Donuts Like One)
Study that means understanding the structure, function, growth, distribution, or other living organisms
What are the concepts of biology?
cells basic unit, genes (DNA/RNA) basic units of eco, unity and diversity, org survival, consume and transfer energy, must be stable environ
Scientific method?
tech used for investigating, new into, correct, applying old knowledge (has jobs, measures, exp), speculates, has to be testable and falsifiable
need for hyp statement?
research, background, ask questions, clear statement, variables, and testable
best hyp?
leads to predictions
strongest hyp?
from controlled exp, purpose of exp to agree or disagree with observation
what can happen to original hyp? what comes out of it after?
refined, changed, cut it, growth, gen theory forms
Cell Theory?
cells basic unit and fundamental for all, new cells from old
Who developed the cell theory? How?
Hooke ( with pond water experiment)
Hooke
found cells when he was looking through a microscope of some tree bark (described them as little rooms)
Van Leeuwenhoek
examined some pond water and discovered small single celled organism called animalcules
Schleidon
concluded that all plants are made of cells
4 eons? (PPAH)
Phanerozoic, Proterozoic, Archeon, Hadean
3 eras in Phanerozoic? what era does the remaining three have?
cenozoic, mesozoic, Paleozoic, one era called the Precambrian
what happened during Hadeon?
formation of Earth (cooled) so continents and life could form
what do cells express?
hereditary info
what was the time period for RNA? what does it do?
after the solar system but before DNA took over as main catalyst and structure of cells. stores gene intimation and catalyzes chem reaction in old cells
sequence of cell formation?
eve starts from photocell with heat and cold, RNA catalysts: speed reproduce and strengthen membrane, metabolism starts (chains of chem reactions)
3 steps of endosymbiosis?
infoldings of plasma membrane, euk consume aerobic bacteria and evo into mitochondrial,
plasma membrane?
membrane that surrounds a cell and regulates passage of molecules and ions
mitochondria
eukaryotic organelle that is surrounded by two membranes and site of breathing for the cell and also energy production
cytoplasm
all the parts of a cell in the plasma membrane, excluding the nucleus
cytoskeleton
only found in eukaryotic cells and is responsible for the structure, support, locomotion, and transport of materials within the cell
nucleus
in e cells, contain the chromosomes and surrounded by a double membrane
