Chapter 1: Pathogenic Microorganisms Flashcards
What are Pathogens?
Microorganisms that can cause infectious disease in humans.
Pathogens are also referred to as?
Germs.
What are the Pathogenic microorganisms divided into?
Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Parasites, and Rickettsiae.
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that reproduce very quickly by?
Cells division and are usually grouped into three categories classifies by shape.
What are the three categories that bacteria is grouped into?
Coccus or round, Spirochete or twisted and Bacillus or rod shaped.
What are Viruses?
Smallest of the microorganisms and need to invade living cells in order to reproduce.
What is Fungi?
Spore-producing microorganisms that include yeasts and molds.
What are Spores?
Microscopic particles that allow fungi to reproduce. similar to plant seeds.
What are Parasites?
Microorganisms that depend on a host for their nutrients.
What is a Host?
An organism that supports a parasite.
Protozoa are single-celled parasites and can cause?
Serious disease in human including malaria.
What are Rickettsiae?
Microorganisms depend completely on their host for survival.
Most Rickettsial pathogens are transmitted by?
Ectoparasites such as fleas, lice, mites, bedbugs and ticks.
What happens when Ectoparasites attach themselves to the skin of animals or humans?
Completely depend on the. host for nourishment.
Ectoparasites are responsible for common infections such as?
Scabies, lice and Lyme disease.
