Chapter 1 Lecture/ revel notes Flashcards
what do biological psychologist believe about human consciousness
“the mind is what the brain does”
what side of the brain receives info from the right visual field
left side of brain
what side of the brain receives from the left visual field
right side of brain
in the spilt brain video, what was the subjects response when info was flashed to his right visual field?
he was able to say what it was
in the spilt brain video what was the subjest response when info was flashed to his left visual field?
he was not able to say what it was, instead he was drawing what it was, and he was using his “LEFT” hand. when he was drawing, he actually didn’t know what he was drawing. he didn’t realize what he drew until he recognizes it.
what is contralateral hemisphere? and contralateral organization? contralateral motor system? (spilt brain video illustrates this)
functional localization
“the idea that specific areas of the brain contribute more or less to functions”
what side of brain is language
left hemisphere
what side of the brain in non-verbal?
right hemisphere
in the video “spilt brain” what happened with the subject when they flashed veggie face to the right visual field (when his left hemisphere was processing the image)
he was paying attention to the details - he saw books, veggies (detail analysis) -but not the faces
in the video “spilt brain” what happened with the subject when they flashed veggie face to the LEFT visual field (when his RIGHT hemisphere was processing the image)
He say the faces - GLOBAL anaylsis
KW-LO- Describe the behavior of people with spilt brain and explain what study of this phenomenon contributes to our understanding of self-awareness.
1.1 Compare the roles of generalization and reduction in behavioral neuroscience research
1.2 Summarize contributions to the modern field of behavioral neuroscience made by individuals involved in philosophy, physiology, and other disciplines
1.3 Describe the role of natural selection in the evolution of behavioral traits
1.4 Identify factors involved in the evolution of behavioral traits
1.5 outline reason for the use of animals in behavioral neuroscience research and the regulations in place for oversight of this research
what are the 4 goals of a psychologist?
describe, explain, predict & control
1.6 Discuss ethical consideration in research with human participants
What are the goals of Biological psychology
Generalization (inductive reasoning) & Reduction (deductive reasoning)
What is generalization?
- a type of scientific explanation
- (KW)infer general conclusion from particular instances
-general conclusions based on many observations
-examples :
-(textbook) different chemicals related to aggression
-(KW) Left hemisphere control language
what is reduction?
(textbook) a type of scientific explanation; a phenomenon is described in terms of the more elementary processes that underlie it.
(KW) Explain phenomena in terms of simpler processes
examples:
-(textbook) motor behavioral when people are learning to walk. by breaking it down which areas are the brain being used
- (KW) Fear response. “public service announcement of active shooter” the fear response of an active shooter happening is a complex… looking at what happens in fear physiologically? what happens in fear behaviorally-motor?? what happens in fear in processes in the brain, which part of brain is observing facial expressions of others? emotional response of fear.
how do physiological/Biological Psychologist work ( in techniques)? (kw)
both ways… bridge gap physiology/biology and behavior
