Chapter 1, Key issue 1 VOCAB test Flashcards
Map
Flat scale model of a surface or portion of it.
Map Scale
The relationship between the size of an object on a map and the size of the actual feature on Earths surface.
GI SCIENCE
The development and data about earth acquired through satellite and other electronic technologies.
Volunteer Geographic Information (VGI)
Creation and dissemination of geographic data contributed voluntarily and for free by indivuduals
Projection
The scientific method of transferring locations on earth surface to a flat map.
Cartography
The process of making maps
Meridan
Lines drawn between the North and South poles on a map or globe.
Citizen Science
Scientific research by amateur scientists
Latitude
The numbering system to indicate the location of each parallel. Parallel lines go from left to right across the globe.
Longitude
The numbering system to indicate the location of each meridian line. Meridian lines go top to bottom on the globe.
Prime Meridian
The meridian that passes through Greenwich, England at a 0-degree longitude.
Greenwich Mean Time
0 degree longitude, it is the point from which all other time zones are set.;
Place
A specific point on Earth that something occupies. Place describes the human and physical characteristics of a location.
International Date Line
International dateline is 180 degrees longitude. When you cross it heading east towards America you turn clock back 24 hours. When you cross it heading west away from America, you turn clock ahead 24 hours.
Geographic Information System (G.I.S.)
Geographical information system is a computer system that stores, organizes, analyzes, and displays information about a location in layers.
Remote Sensing
Involves satellites that scan the Earth’s surface from space, and transmit these images to a receiving station on Earth.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
Using multiple satellites in space, global positioning system can accurately determine the precise position of something on Earth.
Region
An area distinguished by a unique combination of trends, or features.
Space
The physical gap or interval between two objects.
Connection
Are relationships between people and objects across the barrier of space.
Geotagging
Identification and storage of a piece of information by its precise latitude and longitude coordinates.
Mashup
A map that overlays data from one source on top of a map provided by a mapping service.
Mental/Cognitive Map
A representation of a portion of earth’s surface based on what an individual knows about a place
Participating GIS (PGIS)
Community based mapping representing local knowledge and information.
Parallel
Is a series of circles drawn around the globe parallel to the equator.
