Acute illness :
A sudden illness from which the person is expected to recover.
Chronic illness :
An on-going illness that is slow or gradual, it has no cure, it can be controlled and prevented with proper treatment.
Terminal illness :
An illness or injury from which the person will not likely recover.
Hospice :
A health care agency or program for persons who are dying.
Assisted living residence (ALR) :
It provides housing, personal care, support services, health care, and social activities in a home-like setting to persons needing help with daily activities.
Health team :
The many health care workers whose skills and knowledge focus on the person’s total care. The goal is to provide quality of care.
Nursing team :
Those who provide nursing care. RNs, LPNs/ LVNs, and CNAs are part of nursing team.
Registered Nurse (RN) :
A nurse who has completed a 2, 3, or 4- year nursing program and has passed a licensing test.
Licensed practical nurse(LPN) :
A nurse who has completed a practical nursing program and has passed a licensing test.
Licensed vocational nurse(LVN) :
A nurse who has completed a practical nursing program and has passed licensing test; LVNs are allowed to work just in California and Texas.
Nursing assistant(CNA) :
A person who has passed a nursing assistant training and competency evaluation program.
Surveyor :
A person who collects information by observing and asking questions.
Hospital care ( in-patient ) :
In-patient care is health care a person receives when admitted to an agency such as a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
Hospital care ( Out-patient ) :
Out-patient care includes medical or surgical care received when a person is not admitted to an agency.
Long-term care centers :
Long-term care centers are designed to meet the needs for persons who can not care for themselves at home but don’t need hospital care. Persons in long-term care centers are called “residents”.
What services are provided in Long-term care centers ?
Care needs range from simple to complex. Medical, nursing, dietary, recreation, rehabilitation, and social services are provided.
What services does the Board and care homes provide ?
board and care homes ( group homes) provide a room, meals, laundry, and supervision. Some homes are for older persons. Others are for people with certain problems.
What is the Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) ?
Skilled nursing facilities (SNFS) provide complex care for severe health problems. They are part of hospitals or nursing centers. SNF residents need time to recover or rehabilitation. Others never go home.
Memory care units :
A memory care unit is designed for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The unit is usually closed off from other parts of the center. Residents can wander freely in closed unit provided.
Who is Director of nursing(DON) ?
DON is an RN. The DON is responsible for the entire nursing staff and the nursing care given.
Name the five nursing care patterns :
- Functional nursing.
- Team nursing.
- Primary nursing.
- Case management.
- Patient-focused care.
Functional nursing :
- Focuses on tasks and jobs.
* Each nursing team member has certain tasks and jobs to do.
Team nursing :
- A team of nursing staff is led by an RN.
* A team leader delegates care based on the person’s needs and team member abilities.
Primary nursing :
- The primary nurse is responsible for the person’s total care.
- The nursing team assists as needed.
Case management :
• A case manager coordinates care from admission through discharge and into the home or long-term care centers setting.
Patient-focused care :
- Services are moved from departments to the bedside.
* The nursing team performs basic skills usually done by other health team members.
An agency must meet standards for :
- Licensure.
- Certification.
- Accreditation.
Why are the surveys done ?
Surveys are done to see if standards are met.
What are the survey process ?
- Review policies, procedures, and medical records.
- Interview staff, patients, and families.
- Observe how care is given.
- Observe if dignity and privacy are promoted.
- Check for cleanliness and safety.
- Make sure staff meet state requirements.
What are your roles in the survey process ?
- provide quality care.
- protect the person’s right.
- provide for the person’s and your own safety.
- Help keep the agency clean and safe.
- Act in a professional manner.
- Have good work ethics.
- Follow agency policies and procedures.
- Answer questions honestly and completely.
