Chapter 1: Introduction To Cognitive Psychology Flashcards
How is the mind defined
The mind creates and controls mental functions such as perception attention memory emotions language decision making thinking and reasoning.
The mind is a system that creates representations of the world so that we can act within it to achieve goals.
Define cognition
The mental processes that our mind does.
What did donders discover when measuring how long it takes to make a decision
Reaction time- how long it takes to respond to presentation of a stimulus
+Simple reaction time
+Choice reaction time
This showed that presenting a stimulus causes a mental response which leads to a Behavioural response. The reaction time is the time between the presentation of the stimulus and Behavioural response.
What important principle was established about cognitive psychology
Mental response can’t be measured directly but must be inferred from observing behavior.
Explore Wundt approach of structuralism
According to structuralism our overall experience is determined by combining basic elements of experience or sensations.
Analytic introspection: a technique in which trained participants describe sensations feelings and thought processes in response to stimuli.
With Watson’s approach to behaviourism he made what 2 keys points regarding analytic introspection
He rejected it as a method and observable behavior not consciousness as the main topic of study.
What is the information processing approach
According to the info processing approach the operation of the mind can be described in terms of stages.
Define artificial intelligence
Making a machine behave in ways that would be called intelligent if a human were so behaving.
In cognitive psychology what is a structural model
They are representations of a physical structure that mimics appearance of object.
What are process models
They represent the processes that are involved in cognitive mechanism between processes.
What is cognitive psychology
Is the branch of psychology concerned with the scientific study of the mind.
