The industry that encompasses the transportation, lodging, entertainment and feeding of travellers.
Tourism
A tourism experience that teaches travellers about the agricultural industry in Canada through hands on farm life experiences.
Agricultural Tourism
A factor which helps tourism to flourish. Credit Cards, Travellers Cheques, automatic banking and currency exchange machines all make travelling easier.
Common Currency
Any travel that takes a person 80 km away from his or her place of residence for any reason other than a commute to work or school.
Trip
Any person who travels at least 80 km from his or her place of residence, stays less than 24 hours, and is not commuting to work or school or operating as part of a crew on a plane, train, airplane, truck, bus or ship.
Excursionists/Day Trippers
The difference that occurs when the dollars spent by outbound tourists exceeds the revenues generated by inbound tourists.
Travel Deficit
One who travels outside their country of residence to a foreign country as a tourist.
Outbound tourists
Travel by a foreign tourist in a specific country other than their country of residence. Example: A British tourist visiting Canada is this to Canada.
Inbound tourists
Persons travelling within the country in which they reside and stay for a period of at least 24 hours and travel at least 80 km away from their place of residence.
Domestic tourists
This occurs when the beneficial effect of tourism dollars is experienced by almost all community members
Multiplier Effect
A community’s need to import workers and goods to sustain an influx of tourists.
Leakage
This occurs when an employee of a hotel or other tourism based operation uses his or her salary to pay for groceries, entertainment, etc.
Ripple Effect
Tourism that would include activities such as a tour of wineries, a sort course at a cooking school, a series of lectures on foods of a region combined with a local food festival.
Culinary Tourism
Responsible travel aimed at learning about the interrelationships and physiology of organisms and their environment; focuses on nature related experiences that help people appreciate and understand our natural resources and conservation.
Ecotourism
This tourism product appeals to those who enjoy the adrenalin rush of danger.
Extreme Tourism
This tourism type involves travellers choosing a destination to gain access to specific medical procedures.
Medical Tourism
This type of tourism focuses on the overall health and well being of the traveller.
Spa Tourism
Using a portion or an entire vacation to help others and give back to the global community (ie Habitat for Humanity)
Volunteer Tourism
A person visiting a country other than the one in which he or she usually resides and staying for a period of at least 24 hours
Foreign tourists (International tourists)
A niche tourism market focused specifically towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people
