Chapter 1 - Intro to Materials Flashcards
What are Metals and Alloys?
Pure or a combination metallic elements
What are Ceramics/glasses?
Compounds of metallic & non-metallic elements
What are Polymers/plastics?
Chemical compositions including C, H, and other non-metals
What are the general properties of Metals and Alloys?
- great thermal and electical conductors
- high strength
- high stiffness
- ductile
What are the general properties of Ceramics and Glasses?
- insulating (non-conductive)
- high strength
- high melting point
- very brittle
What are composites and advanced materials?
A combination of 2 or more types of materials
What is steel made of?
Iron and a bit of carbon
What is brass made of?
copper and zinc alloy
When trying to figure out what order to put the types of materials based on the young modulus, what other type of factor can you look at instead?
Bond strength.
what are Ashby maps useful for?
What types of scales are commonly seen in them?
comparing material properties
Logarithmic, exponential
