Iānua
Front door
It consisted of a tall double door

Entrance hall
The first room you would enter after going through the Iānua (front door). Was only a short corridor that led to the Ātrium.
Ātrium
Main room
Used for important family occasions and for receiving visitors. Similar to a modern day living room.
Compluvium
Large square hole in the ceiling for catching water. The roof would slope inward towards the hole to catch more water. Water would fall in and be stored in the Impluvium. Source of drinking water.
Impluvium
A shallow rectangular pool, used for collecting rainwater. Water would fall in from the Compluvium. (Large square hole in the ceiling)
Cubiculum
Bedroom
Mostly used for sleeping
Tablīnum
The study
Used for doing paperwork, writing, or reading.
Peristylium
Garden court
Area of the house that surrounded the garden. Acted as a second main room.
Triclīnīum
Dining room
Where food was eaten
Culīna
Kitchen
Where food was cooked
Latrīna
Lavatory/bathroom
Was not used for bathing. Only for relieving bodily waste.
Larārium
Shrine of the household gods
Would be in a corner by the main door. Was used for worship by the family.
Hortus
The garden
Was at the center of the Peristylium. (Garden court)
