Chapter 1 GeoSpatial Flashcards
What is the definition of geospatial technology?
a # of different high systems that acquire/analyze/manage/store/ or visualize types of location-based data
What are three main subfields in geospatial technology?
Remote Sensing, GIS, GPS
GIS definition
Geographic information system: computer based system that maps, analyzes, and retrieves location data
Remote Sensing Definition
Acquisition of data (satellites, aircrafts, UAV) without touching object/ no physical contact
GPS definition
Acquisition of real time location info from satellites in Earth’s orbit
Geospatial technology has been widely used in many fields. Name at least five fields.
Archeology: Use GIS for mapping archegonial sites
Intelligence: Use GIS to acquire human patterns
Environmental monitoring: Analyze pollution levels
Forestry: Manages and tracks animals, fires, and amount of forest
Urban Planning: Use GIS to plan out driving routes to create new road systems
Geospatial data is the heart of geospatial technology applications. What is the definition of geospatial
data? Give three examples of how geospatial data is used in various fields and disciplines
Geospatial data is location based data
1 example: Google Maps: getting directions on phone to your job
2 example: Zillow: Using real estate website to find a house
3 example: Instagram: Geotagging a picture to your location
Non-spatial data is another essential component in geospatial technology. What are examples of nonspatial data? Name at least three.
Names of people in a house
Price of a house
Price of the land of a house
What is the definition of geolocation? How does an electronic device determine your location?
Geolocation is determining where something is in the real world. An electronic device can find your longitude and latitude using the cell towers/GPS/IP addresses/Wifi connection
What is the W3C geolocation API?
A set of commands and techniques used by programmers to obtain the location info of your phone, tablet, or comptuter
What are the pros and cons of geolocation?
Pros: People can receive help in times of an emergency
Cons: Privacy and Data can be breached
