Chapter 1 - Ecosystems Flashcards
Define stewardship.
Stewardship is a way of acting that involves taking personal responsibility for the management and care of something.
Define environment.
The environment is all the living and non-living things that exist in earth as well as their interactions with each other.
Define sustainability.
Sustainability in the environment means that populations of plants, animals, and other living organisms can continue to interact and to reproduce indefinitely.
Define biodiversity.
Biodiversity is the number of different types of organisms in an area. Higher levels of biodiversity means higher numbers of different types of organisms.
Define system and components.
A system is a group of individual parts that interact as a whole to accomplish a task.
The parts of a system are called components.
What is a holistic approach?
The holiest approach means that he entire system is emphasized. It is considered as a whole
Define ecology.
Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other as well as with their environment.
Define biotic and abiotic factors.
Biotic factors - living things, organisms
Abiotic factors - everything else; rocks, hours of daylight, air concentration in seawater
Define species and population.
Species - a group of similar organisms in an ecosystem. Can reproduce with each other.
Population - a group of members of the same species that live in the same area.
What is the physical environment of an organism called?
Habitat.
What is a community?
A community is made up of populations of different species that live and interact in an area.
What is niche?
Niche is all the interactions of a given species with its ecosystem.
List all the terrestrial biomes.
- deciduous forests
- boreal forests
- tundra
- grasslands
- temperate coniferous forests
List the aquatic biomes.
- marine biomes
* freshwater biomes
What is the atmosphere?
The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds Earth.
