Chinese immigration act 1885
The federal government wanted to discourage Chinese people from immigration so they introduced a head tax
Head tax
A fee that Chinese immigrants were required to pay after the Chinese Immigration Act in 1885 when entering Canada
Chinese Exclusion Act 1923
Replaced Chinese Immigration Act & it was an even stricter act that tried to stop Chinese immigration altogether.
Repealed in 1947
Komagata Maru
A mostly Sikh ship that was forced to return to India from Vancouver because because they weren’t granted entry into Canada
Residential school
Government authorized schools run by religious groups set up to educate Aboriginal children. Kids lived away from their homes
Suffragist
A group of women that wanted the right to vote
