Define abnormal behavior (psychological disorder) using the three criteria outlined by the authors.
o Abnormal behavior: psychological dysfunction within an individual is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected.
Describe various views of abnormal behavior and societal attitudes towards it. (refer to our discussions of The Soldier’s Heart video)
o Those with abnormal behavior are viewed as weak, unable to cure themselves. Society tends to fear or ostracize them.
Define prevalence
o Prevalence: number of people displaying a disorder in the total population at any given time
Define incidence
o Incidence: number of new cases of a disorder appearing during a specific period
Define course
o Course: pattern of development and change of a disorder over time
Define prognosis
o Prognosis: predicted development of a disorder over time
Define etiology
o Etiology: cause or source of a disorder.
