Chapter 1 - cellular structure Flashcards
Abiotic
non living things
Biotic
Living things
All living things must possess all of the following qualities
Movement
reproduce
sensitivity
growth
respiration
equlibrium
excresion
nutrition
Cell theory
- All living things are made of cells
- Cells are the smallest and most basic unit of life.
- All new cells have arisen from pre-existing cells.
All cells have 4 features in common:
genetic material
plasma membrane
cytosol
ribosomes
2 types of cells
prokaryotes
eukaryotes
prokaryotes?
single celled
No nucleus – DNA floats freely in the cytoplasm.
no membrane bound organelles
Relatively small and simple
DNA is present as one large, circular chromosome
eukaryotes?
single or multicellular
membrane bound organelles
Nucleus present, where the DNA is stored.
Relatively large and complex,
DNA is present as several linear chromosomes
What do only plant cells have that animals dont?
chloroplasts
cell wall
what do only animal cells have that plants dont?
lysosomes
flagella
cillia
nucleus function
stores genetic material and DNA
holds instructions of the cell
Rough ER
adds the finishing touches to the ribosomes
smooth ER
processes fats and lipids
golgi apparatus
packaging system for ribosomes
packs protiens into vesicles
lysosomes
sorts waste from the cell
