Chapter 1 - Cells Flashcards
Ribosome
Creates protein for the cell.
Cell membrane
Controls the passage of important substances such as glucose in and out of the cell. Also controls movement of other substances like urea or hormones in and out of the cell.
Nucleus
Controls all of the activities of the cell, surrounded by the nuclear membrane. It contains the genes and chromosomes of the cell, containing information on how to produce protein needed to build new cells and keep the current cell going.
Cytoplasm
A liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended. This is where most of the chemical reactions take place.
Mitochondria
These are organelles where aerobic respiration takes place to create energy for the cell.
Permanent vacuole
The permanent vacuole is an organelle in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. It keeps the cell rigid.
Chloroplasts
Found in all green part of a plant. Contain a green substance called chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll absorbs light so that a plant can perform photosynthesis.
Eukaryotic cells
Animal and plant cells are eukaryotic cells. These all have all the crucial components like cell membranes, cytoplasm and genetic material enclosed in a nucleus.
Prokaryotic cells
Prokaryotic cells are usually single cell organisms, like bacteria. These can iclude organelles like plasmids, which are used for the storage of genetic material.
