B17 - Organising an Ecosystem Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three most important conditions for decay?
A
Temperature, moisture and oxygen.
2
Q
Why is a good temperature important for decomposition?
A
Chemical reactions work faster in warm conditions - they may slow down or stop if if it is too cold or hot.
3
Q
Why is moisture important for decomposition?
A
The moisture makes it easier for them to digest their food and also prevents them from drying out.
4
Q
Why is the presence of oxygen important?
A
While some microorganisms are anaerobic (can survive without oxygen), most decomposers respire aerobically. This means that whenever oxygen is present decay happens faster.
