Chapter 1 - Bonds Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a bond formed between two non metallic atoms, sharing electrons.
What is formed when a metal and non-metal bond?
An ionic bond
What is a coordinate bond?
A coordinate bond is a covalent bond in which both atoms are from the same element.
What is the best way to describe a metallic bond?
Metal/metal bond:
A metallic bond is formed due to the electrostatic force of attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons. Metal atoms arrange themselves into a 3D lattice structure.
What is a molecule?
A small group of atoms joined by covalent bonds. A molecule can be represented as a formula.
Non-polar covalent bond
A covalent bond where a pair of electrons are shared equally between two atoms. For this to occur, the atoms must have the same electronegativity therefore must be atoms of the same element.
Polar covalent bond
A covalent bond where a pair of electrons are not shared equally by two non-metallic atoms.
