Chapter 1: Biomes & Food Security Flashcards
What makes each biome unique???
Each biome has a unique climate, plants and animals
What are the five main biomes???
Desert Forest Ocean Grassland Tundra
What key characteristics does each biome have???
Desert: any biome with little or no vegetation. A desert can be covered in ice too
Forest: lots of varied vegetation and animals. Lots of tall trees
Ocean: under water plants are different to that of land and species are different too
Grassland: spaced out vegetation and animals. Ground is mostly flat and expansive
Tundra: a cold biome with small, dead tees that have been killed with the cold.
Deforestation
Cutting down trees for the use of humans and for urbanisation.
Arable
When the earth is Suitable for growing crops
Sustainable

Crop Yield
The produce that comes from crop
Tundra
A cold land area in which any vegetation is near death due to the cold.
Temperate Rainforests
Rainforest with very humid climates
Food insecurity
When food isn’t suitable for human use
Urbanisation
The development of biomes into urban areas due to deforestation and population increases.
Anthromes
Anything modified by humans
Food Security
The safety of your food. If your food is insecure it may be dangerous to eat.
