Chapter 1-Aviation Fuels Flashcards
Aviation Fuels
-Have a much stringent requirements than fuels for ground use(heating and transport).
- can often contain additives to enhance or maintain properties important to fuel performance and handling.
Two categorises of Aviation Fuel
a.AViation GASoline <AVGAS></AVGAS>
b. AViation TURbine Fuel <AVTUR></AVTUR>
AVGAS
Aviation Gasoline
Used for piston engine aircraft
(SG of 0.69)
AVTUR
Aviation Turbine Fuel
Used for gas turbine powered aircraft
(SG of 0.8)
Calorific value
Amount of heat released when a unit mass of fuel is burned and measured in heat units (kilojoules)
Volatility
-Tendency of a substances to evaporate at normal temperatures
-ability of the fuel to mix readily with warm or cold air, vaporising to form a combustible gas.
Specific Gravity (SG)
Define as the weight of the Fuel
Weight or density of liquid compared to an equal quantity of water
(SG of 1.0)
The range and endurance of an aircraft depends on
The Number of Kilojoules
(Calorific value)
Approved Fuels
a. AVTUR -An aviation kerosene type fuel
b. AVTAG -(blend of gasoline and kerosene) wide cut fuel
c. AVCAT -higher flashpoint (navy)
d. AVGAS -quality gasoline type fuel
Anti-icing Additives
To reduce the temperature at which ice particles form from the water in the fuel system
Name the anti-icing additives that can be added to fuel.
FUEL SYSTEM ICE INHIBITOR
(FSII)
Fuel identification marking consists of what
Colour bands, letters and figures
