Chapter 1 Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atoms
Relative mass and charge of proton
RM - 1
Charge = +1
Relative mass and charge of neutron
RM - 1
Charge - 0
Relative mass and charge of electron
RM - 1/1840
Charge = -1
Why do isotopes have same chemical properties ?
Same no. and arrangement of electrons.
Why do isotopes have different physical properties?
Different no. of neutron so different masses.
What is relative atomic mass in terms of carbon 12 ?
Average mass of an atom of an element to 1/12 the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
What r all atoms measured relative to ?
To the mass of carbon 12 which is 12.0000 given to 4 d.p.
What is relative isotopic mass ?
Mass of a single isotope of an element relative to 1/12 the mass of an atom of carbon 12.
How to calculate relative atomic mass ?
Sum of (relative abundance × mass no.) of each isotope ÷ sum of relative abundance.
