Chapter 1 - atomic Structure Flashcards

1
Q

what is the second step of TOF mass spectrometry?

A

ACCELERATION
- an electric field is applied to give all the ions with the same charge a constant kinetic energy. heavier particles move slower than the lighter particles

Q

what is the third step of TOF mass spectrometry?

A

ION DRIFT
-ions enter a region with no electric filed called the flight tube. Ions are seperated based on different velocities. Smaller ions travel quiickly and arrive at the detector first.

Q

what is the fourth step of TOF mass spectrometry?

A

ION DETECTION
-the detector records the different flight times of the ions. The positively charged ions arrive at the detector and cause a small electric current because of their charge.

Q

what is the fifth step of TOF mass spectrometry?

A

DATA ANALYSIS
-flight times are recorded and analysed as a mass spectrum by the data analyser. The mass spectrum obtained is a plot of relative abundunce against mass to charge ratio .

Q

what is the first step of TOF mass spectrometry?

A

ELECTROSPRAY IONISATION
- a high voltage is applied to the tip of the capillary to produce highly charged droplets. The solvent evaporates from these droplets to produce gaseous charged ions.
