Chapter 11 - Introduction To Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is a group of compounds which have the same general formula. Successive members in a series differ from eachother by a CH2 group
What properties do all the members of a homologous series have?
- same general formula
- show a gradation in physical properties
- have similar chemical properties
- have the same functional group
- differ from succesive members by a CH2 group
What is the meaning of the term isomerism?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural forumla are known as structural isomers
What are chain isomers?
Chain isomerism occurs when there is more than one way of arranging carbon atoms in the longest chain
What are positional isomers?
Positional isomers have the same carbon chain and the same functional group but it is attached at different points along the carbon chain
What are functional group isomers?
Functional group isomers are compounds with same molecular formula that have different functional groups
What is stereoisomerism?
Stereoisomers are molecules that have the same molecular and structural formula but a different arangement of atoms in 3-D space
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms which are responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
