Chapter 1: Approach Control General Flashcards
Complete
What is the restriction for visual approaches?
Not below 2500ft until coordinated with Air
What is Min Stack?
Minimum Stack Level - the lowest whole flight level available which gives at least 1000ft separation from the transition altitude
What is considered high pressure?
1013 or above
At what low pressure must silent handovers be cancelled and why?
976, min stack is FL90
What is the Midlands QNH?
The Birmingham QNH
What are the holding fixes in use at Birmingham?
MAPLE CEDAR GROVE CHASE OLIVE BHX
Who should Birmingham Approach notify when starting/finishing holding?
PC when holding at CHASE
TC when holding at GROVE
What agreement changes when holding commences?
Silent handovers are cancelled
What levels are used in the Birmingham holds?
CHASE, GROVE, OLIVE - FL
MAPLE, CEDAR, BHX - Altitude
Can aircraft fly the Runway 15 ILS/LOC approach without DME?
ILS - Yes, ATC provide ranges at 9nm outbound and 4nm inbound
LOC - No
Can aircraft fly the Runway 33 ILS/LOC approach without DME?
ILS - Yes, ATC provide ranges at 7nm outbound and 4nm inbound
LOC - No
What are the general procedures for RNAV approaches?
- Aircraft routed to Initial Fix
- Aircraft establish on inbound track and route to Final Approach Fix
- Must be established at least 2nm before FAF for RAIM check
- Temperature must be reported below 0°C
What are the restrictions for RNAV approaches?
- Not to be performed below -10°C
- Maximum speed 230kts
What are the missed approach procedures for Runway 15?
- Climb straight ahead to 1000ft
- Turn right to track 167°M to 3000ft
- As directed by ATC
What are the missed approach procedures for Runway 33?
- Climb straight ahead to 3000ft
- As directed by ATC
What are the requirements of a Continuous Descent Approach?
- Aircraft should be given continuous descent from 6000ft
- May have one period of level flight not exceeding 2.5nm
What are the guidelines for a Continuous Descent Approach?
- Top of initial descent point: range check and descent to 6000ft
- Descent from 6000ft to 4000ft at 18nm and range check
- Range check before base leg turn
- Descent from 4000ft at 13nm
When should range checks be provided as a minimum?
- At top of descent or on initial contact
- At the start of CDA reporting criteria (18nm)
- Before turning base leg
What is the standard spacing for Birmingham arrivals?
When should this be increased?
- 4nm, determined at 4DME from touchdown
Should be increased due to:
- Wake turbulence separation
- LVPs
- Gaps as requested by the Air controller
When should transfer of communications occur for an aircraft on an instrument approach?
Between 12-6nm from touchdown
What should happen if the air controller is not in two way communications with an aircraft on an approach by 4nm?
The Air controller shall initiate co-ordination with the radar controller to either:
- Transfer communications immediately
- Co-ordinate a landing clearance
When may departure releases be subject Radar?
- Check North/South/All
- Non SID IFR departures and subsequent departing aircraft
- SVFR departures
- VFR departures unable to comply with not above 2000ft and one of the 4 designated VRPs
- Successive aircraft not separated (???)
- Departures deviating from NPRs
- Runway change
- Departures from non-duty runway
- Aircraft types not included in freeflow departure table
- Following a missed approach
If the Min Stack is FL90 what is the pressure?
940 - 976 hPa
If the Min Stack is FL80 what is the pressure?
977 - 1012 hPa
If the Min Stack is FL70 what is the pressure?
1013+ hPa
What are SLPs
How do they apply at Birmingham?
Speed Limit Points
250kts limit at SLPs or 3 minutes before holding facility
