What are nutrients?
It is a chemical substances needed by the body for growth and development.
What are the FIVE basic nutrients required for a healthy body?
- Carbohydrates
- Fats
- Proteins
- Vitamins and minerals
What are the functions of Proteins?
Support healthy growth and development, repair and maintain cells.
Example: Poultry, meat, seafood and dairy products.
What are the functions of Carbohydrates?
Provide energy for the body.
Example: Oat porridge, rice, bread and pasta.
What are the functions of Fats?
Provide a rich source of energy for the body.
Examples: Cooking oil, butter, margarine and cream.
What are the functions of Vitamins and minerals?
Protect the body against diseases.
Example: Vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, carrots) and fruit (oranges, lemons, tomatoes, berries)
What is a balanced diet?
It is when the body obtains the correct amount of nutrients in needs.
What is the functions of water in the body?
- Maintains body temperature
- Remove waste products
- Transport nutrients
- Helps in digestion
What is the functions of dietary fibre in the body?
- Remove solid waste products

What is an unbalanced diet?
An unbalanced diet means we do not get the right amount of nutrients for healthy growth and energy to perform daily activities. Hence, we may suffer from MALNUTRITION.
What are the dietary guidelines for Singaporeans of all ages?
- Develop healthy eating habits (My healthy plate)
- Reduce FAT intake
- Reduce SALT intake
- Reduce SUGAR intake
- Increase FRUIT and VEGETABLES intake
- Increase CALCIUM intake
- Drink sufficient amounts of WATER

How does My Healthy Plate help us to plan a balanced meal?
It categorises food into four food groups: brown rice and wholemeal bread, meat and others as well as fruit and vegetables. These food groups form the foundation of a healthy diet.
