Chapter 1-A Flashcards
Regulation
Rely upon feedback.
Consists of positive and negative feedback.
Homeostasis
“Steady state”
Ability to maintain a constant internal environment.
Reproduction
To perpetuate (continue indefinitely) the species.
Consists of two methods.
Asexual and sexual reproduction.
Growth
Increase the number or the size of the cells.
Development
Moving from simple to complex in stages.
Responsiveness
Ability to react to stimuli or stimulus (ability to adjust).
Adaption or adaptability
Ability to adjust, ability to change.
Includes Biological Fitness - measure of how many viable offspring.
Evolution
Gradual change through time.
Charles Darwin wrote “origin of species”.
Includes Natural Selection.
DNA - use as genetic information
Metabolism
Sum total of all your energy exchanges in cells.
Includes anabolism and catabolism.
Anabolism - “build up”is the consumption of energy from simple to complex creating bonds.
Catabolism- “tear down” where energy is released and bonds are broken.
Order
Raw materials organizing in a non random or sequence fashion.
Cell
Basic unit of life
Name all the characteristics of life.
- Homeostasis
- Reproduction
- Growth and Development
- Responsiveness
- Adaptation
- Metabolism
- Order
- Made of cells
