The scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Psychology
Any movement or posture produced by an individual that influences it’s relationship to the environment
Behavior
Examples of behavior
head turn, speaking, walking, nest building
Eamples of not behavior
Thinking, feeling, digesting, heartbeat, hearing
Things, such as thinking and feeling, that can’t be directly observed (except with brain scanning equipment)
Mental Processes
Why are mental processes difficult to study
- Can’t be directly observed
- Brain activity can be correlated with certain thoughts or feelings but isn’t definitive
- People lie
The idea that at birth, human minds are a blank slate

The idea that certain smaller elements combine to create the entire mental experience
