Advance directives
Writing a living will or authorizing a durable POA for health care decisions on the patients behalf.
Advocacy
Acting to safeguard and advance the interests of another. Is directed at enabling the child and family to adjust to the changes in the child’s health in their own way
Assent
The voluntary agreement to accept treatment in a research project
Case management
Is a process of coordinating the delivery of health care services in a manner that focuses on both quality and cost outcomes.
Clinical practice guidelines
A comprehensive evidenced based interdisciplinary care plan developed to describe optimal care for a specific health condition
Confidentiality
An agreement between patient and a provider that information discussed during the health care encounter will not be shared without the patient’s permission
Continuity of care
An interdisciplinary process of facilitating a patient’s transition between and among settings based on changing needs and available resources
Critical thinking
An individualized creative thought or reasoning process
Emancipated minors
Economically self supporting adolescents under 18, no longer living at home and not subject to parental control
Ethics
The philosophic study of morality, and the analysis of moral problems and moral judgements
Family centered care
Effort to address and meet the emotional, social, and developmental needs of children and families seeking health care in all settings
Futility
A situation in which treatments do not provide a clear clinical benefit.
Infant mortality rate
Death in infants less than 12 months old. 6.9 deaths per 1000 live births in the US in 2006
Mature minors
Adolescents between 14 and 18 able to understand treatment risks
Morbidity
An illness or injury that limits activity, requires medical attention or hospitalization or results in a chronic condition
